Antelope Island State Park

Not sure of what it would be like, the drive out the roadway on a dike was pretty cool. It was a long (desolate) drive on a slightly curving road from the mainland out to the island. The was a surprising lack of wildlife from what you would expect next to a lake. Also, the water to our right (north) was a different color from that to our left. We late found out that it was saltier, as it had less fresh water coming in than the southern end.

Once we got there, to our happy surprise, we found out that they had a Junior Ranger Program as well. The kiddo decided that we needed to do it, even if it ate into out stop at the dinosaur museum later.

This is one of many bison sculptures at locations on the island.  In addition to the lake and the visitor's center, we saw antelope, bison and even a coyote.

There were a couple of the bison lounging close to the road. They were a bit off, but with a zoom lens I was able to get a decent shot...

But most of them were WAY... off in the distance.  (See the little black dots at the bottom left of that hill on what looks like a road?)

Or those ones over by the shore?

Ah, you got to love a zoom lens! This is the same view Mary was just pointing at. Still too far away to see very well, but much more recognizable as bison...

This guys was walking through the grasses, and didn't look even when I called and honked the horn. Late, at the visitor's center, the ranger told us that while seen on the island occasionally, they are not all that common, and we got a nice shot. She was a little surprised at how cavalier it was about our noise, though.

Finally, back to the visitor's center to take the Junior Ranger pledge! The kiddos are really starting to get into this part of the trip - and love the badges!
